Troubleshooting guide

Napoleon fireplace beeps three times and won't start

On Napoleon electronic-ignition fireplaces, three beeps followed by a red/green light on the control module means it has gone into lockout.

What lockout means

Napoleon's manual explains that the module can lock out under certain conditions. When it does, the fireplace won't ignite or respond to commands. It signals this with three audible beeps, then keeps showing a red/green error code on its status light. The manual we reviewed doesn't publish what each red/green pattern means, so a tech uses the pattern together with other checks to find the cause.

Napoleon's reset steps

  1. Turn the manual gas shut-off valve (on the flex connector) clockwise to OFF.
  2. Set the module's selector switch to OFF.
  3. Wait five minutes so any gas that built up can clear.
  4. Turn the shut-off valve back counter-clockwise to ON.
  5. Set the selector switch to ON or REMOTE.
  6. Start the fireplace.

Important: Napoleon warns not to reset the module more than once within five minutes, because gas may build up in the firebox. If it locks out again, stop and call a qualified tech.

Other Napoleon beeps you might hear

  • One beep when the module powers up means it's ready.
  • When pairing a remote: one beep plus a blinking green status light means it's waiting, and two beeps means the remote paired.

Steps can differ by model, so check the manual for yours. The model number is on the rating plate.

Common questions

Why does my Napoleon fireplace beep 3 times?

Three beeps followed by a red/green status light means the control module has gone into lockout and won't ignite until it's reset. Follow the reset steps in your manual, including waiting five minutes with the gas off, and don't reset more than once in five minutes.

My Napoleon fireplace keeps locking out. What now?

Repeated lockouts point to an underlying problem such as gas supply, a dirty or damaged pilot assembly, or wiring. Stop resetting and have a qualified technician look at it, or show it to a tech on a video call to narrow it down.
