Troubleshooting guide

Gas fireplace remote not working

Most remote problems are batteries or pairing. Work down this list before assuming anything is broken.

1. Batteries, both ends

Replace the batteries in the remote and in the receiver or backup battery pack at the fireplace. Valor recommends quality alkaline AA batteries for its receiver (no rechargeables or store brands) and says rapid beeps from the receiver mean low battery voltage. Napoleon notes that if backup batteries are installed, they must also be removed to re-program.

2. Switches and power

  • The receiver or control module switch should be on REMOTE (Napoleon: middle position on its 3-position receiver switch).
  • Check the breaker and any wall switch. On some systems a wired wall switch overrides the remote.
  • Napoleon also points out that the appliance responds to whichever device turned it on. If you started it from the wall switch, the remote may not control it.

3. Re-pair the remote

Pairing steps differ by system. These are from the manufacturers' own documents:

  • Valor (GV60 system): press and hold the receiver's RESET button until the second beep, release, then press the down-flame button on the remote until the receiver beeps to confirm.
  • Napoleon (receiver models): hold the receiver's reset button until 2 beeps, release after the second beep, then press the small-flame button on the remote within 20 seconds. Another beep means the reset worked.
  • Heat & Glo IntelliFire Touch (IFT): press the pairing button on the control module (ECM). It beeps once and the green light blinks for 14 seconds. While it's blinking, pair the remote as its instructions say. A double beep means success.

Not sure which system you have? The model number on the rating plate tells a tech exactly what's inside.

IntelliFire Touch: "Remote Control Communication Error"

Heat & Glo's IFT guide says the most common cause is that the control module has lost power. Check the breaker, make sure the module is switched to REMOTE (and the master reset switch is ON, if equipped), then give it up to four minutes to reconnect. A slow-blinking green light means it's still searching for a clear channel, which is normal and can take a few minutes. A power outage alone shouldn't require re-pairing.

Common questions

How do I reset my gas fireplace remote?

Replace batteries in the remote and the receiver, make sure the receiver switch is on REMOTE, then follow your system's pairing steps. On many receivers you hold the reset button until it beeps, then press a button on the remote to sync it.

Why did my fireplace remote stop working after a power outage?

Some systems need their backup batteries or power restored before the remote reconnects. Heat & Glo's IntelliFire Touch, for example, should reconnect on its own within about four minutes once the control module has power again, without re-pairing.

Why does my fireplace receiver beep fast?

On Valor's GV60 system, rapid beeps indicate low battery voltage. Replace all four AA batteries in the receiver. Other brands use different beep patterns, so check your manual.
