Proflame 2 blinking red light: what the codes mean

Many gas fireplaces use the SIT Proflame 2 control system. When something is wrong, the control module flashes a red light in a pattern. Count the blinks: each pattern means something different.

Which fireplaces use Proflame 2?

Proflame 2 is a control system made by SIT and used by several fireplace brands. Regency says its units with a black remote use the Proflame II system, and Mendota's FV44i manual lists a SIT ProFlame II module in its parts list. If your remote says Proflame, or your owner's manual mentions an IFC module, this page applies. The red light is on the control module, usually behind the lower grille or access panel.

What the red blinks mean

SIT's installation manual for the Proflame 2 IFC control board lists these red LED signals, in order of priority:

  • No blinks: normal. Power is fine and the backup batteries are good (or not installed).
  • 1 blink, repeating: the backup batteries are getting low. SIT also says the module gives a double beep when it gets an on/off command with low receiver batteries, and after that it stops accepting commands until the batteries are replaced.
  • 2 blinks, repeating: the module detected a pilot flame signal at startup when it shouldn't have one. This is a fault in how the system senses flame, not something a reset fixes.
  • 3 blinks, repeating: lockout. The system has shut itself down after too many unsuccessful ignition tries or an abnormal flame reading. Both gas valves are closed and it ignores on commands until it's reset.

Lockout is a safety feature. SIT's manual says the cause of a lockout should be looked into under safe conditions before the fireplace goes back into normal use.

Two safe things to try first

  1. Fresh batteries. Replace the batteries in the remote and the backup batteries for the control module (often a 4 AA pack). This clears a 1-blink warning and the double beep.
  2. One reset for a 3-blink lockout. SIT's reset is simple: turn the fireplace off with the remote (or the ON/OFF switch on the receiver), wait at least 2 seconds, then turn it back on. You should hear the beeps that confirm the command.

Don't keep resetting it. If it locks out again, or you see 2 blinks, stop. Repeated lockouts mean something is stopping the pilot from lighting or being sensed, and that needs a proper diagnosis.

If it keeps blinking: what a tech pinpoints

Repeated lockouts and 2-blink faults usually come down to one of a few areas: gas getting to the pilot, the pilot and flame-sensing parts, wiring and grounding, or venting and draft (especially on cold days). Telling them apart takes a trained eye on the pilot flame, the module and how the ignition sequence behaves.

That's exactly what a quick video call is for. You point your phone at the control module and the pilot area, show the rating plate, and a tech can usually pinpoint the cause and tell you whether it's a simple fix, a part to order, or a job for someone on site.

Common questions

What does 3 blinks mean on a Proflame 2 fireplace?

Three repeating red blinks mean the control module is in lockout. It shut down after too many failed ignition tries or an abnormal flame reading. SIT's reset is to turn the system off for at least 2 seconds and back on. If it locks out again, stop resetting and have it diagnosed.

Why does my Proflame 2 receiver double beep?

SIT's manual says a double beep when you press on or off means the receiver batteries are low, and the module will stop accepting commands until they're replaced. Replace the backup batteries.

What does 1 blink mean on a Proflame 2 module?

One repeating red blink means the backup battery voltage is in the low range. Replace the batteries.

Can I fix a 2-blink Proflame 2 error myself?

Two blinks mean the module sensed a pilot flame signal at startup when it shouldn't have. That's a fault in the flame-sensing side of the system, so it needs a tech's diagnosis rather than a reset.
