Troubleshooting guide
Heat & Glo IntelliFire error codes and blinking lights
Heat & Glo's parent company, Hearth & Home Technologies, publishes these codes in its service guides. Here's what they mean for you.
IntelliFire Touch (IFT): control module light codes
The IFT control module (ECM) blinks red and green to report errors. If you have the RC400 touchscreen remote, it shows a message too.
| Light pattern | Remote message | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 3 red : 1 green | "Appliance Safely Disabled" | No ignition, or the flame wasn't sensed, during the ignition try. Causes include no gas supply, a poor ground or a dirty flame sensor. |
| 2 red : 1 green | "Error Pilot Flame" | The pilot valve solenoid wasn't detected: a gas valve or valve wiring issue. |
| 2 red : 2 green | Spark coil failure inside the control module. The guide says the module can't be repaired and must be replaced. | |
| 5 red : 1 green | "Error Power Vent" | Only on units with a power vent kit: a power vent problem. |
| Slow-blinking green | Normal. The module is searching for a clear radio channel. Wait for it to finish (can take a few minutes). |
The guide also notes that on certain natural-gas setups, a failed 90-second ignition try shows "Sorry your appliance did not start. Try again by pressing Flame ON." That's a soft lockout that needs no reset.
IntelliFire Plus: flash codes
Older IntelliFire Plus modules flash a single color a set number of times, then lock out:
| Flashes | What it means |
|---|---|
| 1 flash | The fuel-type selector is in the wrong position or damaged. |
| 2 flashes | Not enough voltage from the ignition coil to the pilot igniter. Clear the lockout and try again; if it keeps happening, the module needs replacing. |
| 3 flashes | The pilot sparks and may light for up to 60 seconds, but the main valve won't open: low gas supply, a false flame signal, or a shorted or disconnected sensor or igniter lead. |
What you can safely do
- Make sure the gas shut-off to the fireplace is open and, for propane, the tank isn't empty.
- Check power: breaker on, module on REMOTE, and backup batteries fresh if you're on battery power.
- Use the reset steps in your owner's manual once, and wait between attempts.
Sensor cleaning, wiring, gas valve and module checks are tech-level work. The guide itself says they're for qualified service technicians. A video call can usually narrow it down to the part before anyone orders one.
Common questions
What does 3 red 1 green mean on a Heat & Glo fireplace?
On the IntelliFire Touch (IFT) control, 3 red and 1 green means the appliance was safely disabled because it didn't ignite, or didn't sense the flame, during the ignition try. Check that the gas is on, then have a tech look at the flame sensor, ground and pilot assembly if it repeats.
Why is the green light blinking on my IntelliFire module?
A slow-blinking green light after the module is switched to REMOTE means it's searching for a clear radio channel. That's normal and can take several minutes. Wait for it to stop before pairing a remote.
Do these codes apply to other brands?
IntelliFire controls are made by Hearth & Home Technologies, which also owns brands like Heatilator, Quadra-Fire and Majestic, so some of their models use the same system. Check your owner's manual or the control module label to confirm which system you have.
