Gas emergency numbers in the Charlotte area
- Piedmont Natural Gas: 800-752-7504, or 911. Piedmont says to call it if you smell natural gas or suspect a leak, and to always call 911 for emergencies.
If your gas bill comes from a different company (some towns around Charlotte, and the South Carolina side, have their own gas providers), use the emergency number on your bill. If your gas comes from a tank, see the propane section below.

Mostly electric heat, with plenty of gas
62% of North Carolina homes heat mainly with electricity, 29% with natural gas and 4% with propane (EIA, 2020). So around Charlotte a gas fireplace often sits in a house with a heat pump, and it may only run on the coldest nights. That's when a pilot that's been off since spring tends to give trouble. Down I-85, see metro Atlanta.
New roof? Check the gas vents
Piedmont Natural Gas warns that a roof replacement that doesn't follow local building codes can remove or separate gas vent connections and leak carbon monoxide into the home, and that a properly licensed mechanical or plumbing contractor has to pull a permit to check or repair damaged vent piping. It credits the guidance to Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement. If your gas fireplace vents through the roof and acts up after roof work, stop using it and have the vent checked before anything else.
After a gas outage, Piedmont relights
Piedmont says that after an outage its technicians have to turn each meter back on, then enter the home to test and relight gas equipment and appliances, and an adult over 18 has to be there to let them in to relight pilot lights. If your fireplace still won't light once service is back, a tech can walk you through your model's steps by video.
Propane fireplace in the Charlotte area?
If your fireplace runs on propane (a tank or cylinders outside and a propane company that delivers, rather than a utility gas meter), the utility numbers above aren't your first call. Smell gas? Get out, then call your propane supplier, or 911, from outside. In North Carolina, 4% of homes heat mainly with propane (EIA, 2020).
Propane fireplaces have a few problems of their own: a low or empty tank, a fireplace that won't light after a refill, and a regulator buried in snow or ice. The propane industry's safety guide says that if your tank runs out, your propane supplier or a qualified pro should leak-check the system before the gas goes back on. Our guide covers the safe checks: propane fireplace won't light or stay lit.
Electric fireplaces in Charlotte homes
Most North Carolina homes heat with electricity (EIA, 2020), and around Charlotte you'll find electric fireplaces in uptown apartments, bonus rooms and newer builds in Huntersville and Concord. We help with those by video too. A tech goes through the safe checks with you: plugged straight into a working wall outlet, the breaker or GFCI not tripped, the unit's own power switch on, fresh remote batteries, then the maker's reset after a cool-down if the overheat switch shut it off. We'll never ask you to open the unit or touch wiring. See electric fireplace not working.
Charlotte fireplace not working? Start here
- Pilot won't light: Clicking but no flame, or no spark at all. The usual causes, in order.
- Pilot lights, then goes out: It lights, but won't stay lit. Usually the flame isn't heating the sensor enough.
- Pilot is lit, burner won't come on: The pilot's burning but the main flame never comes up.
- Propane fireplace won't light: Low tank, a recent run-out or refill, or a regulator under snow. Safe checks first.
- Electric fireplace won't turn on: No power, no heat, or it shut itself off. The safe checks manufacturers list, in order.
- Remote not working: Batteries, switch position, then re-pairing. Steps from the manufacturers.
- Proflame 2 blinking red light: One, two or three red blinks on the control module. What each one means and what to do first.
- Need a replacement part? Send us your model and serial, and a tech matches the exact gas, propane or electric fireplace part.
Common questions
Do you have a fireplace technician in Charlotte?
Our techs help by video, from anywhere. You show the tech your fireplace with your phone and they guide you by voice. If the job needs someone on site, we'll help you find a local pro.
Who do I call if I smell gas in Charlotte?
Leave first. From a safe place, call 911 and Piedmont Natural Gas at 800-752-7504, or the emergency number on your bill if another company delivers your gas.
We just had the roof replaced and the fireplace is acting up. Can you help?
Turn it off first. A damaged or disconnected vent needs a licensed contractor on site, not a video call, and we'll help you find a local pro. Once the vent has been checked, a tech can help by video with lighting or remote problems.
